Marcelo Dias: We need to win our games to keep fighting for the league

Earlier today Balzan added to their lead at the top of the BOV Premier League with a 2-1 victory against Gzira United.

Second placed Hibernians also needed to claim three points if they were to continue their pursuit of the Maltese top spot.

With the title race heating up, one of the biggest games of the season saw Hibernians take on league rivals, Valletta.

First placed Balzan faced Gzira United who are currently 10th, therefore a win was vital for both leading teams if they wanted to continue their impressive record in the league.

Both Hibs and Balzan had recorded 10 wins out of 16 games this season prior to today’s fixtures and are the two hot favourites to claim the BOV Premier League title.

Balzan added three points to their name with a 2-1 win over Gzira United, meaning that the pressure had been put on Hibs to do the same.

With the title in the sights of both sides, Hibs had the harder task as they played Maltese powerhouse, Valletta. This didn’t stop the Peacocks as they also claimed three points through a 1-0 win courtesy of Jackson Lima’s 60th minute strike.

The day ended with both sides remaining as they started, Balzan leading and Hibs second, just one point behind.

Valletta however, are now in fifth place with 30 points as Floriana find themselves in third with 32 points, followed by fourth placed Birkirkara who are also on 30 points and ahead of Valletta on goal difference.

Hibernians’ Brazilian attacker, Marcelo Dias spoke about how important winning the league would be: “It is always important in the league, for the players and the club will always remember that day and year.

“We are only one point behind Balzan and we need to win our games to keep fighting for the league.”

The Brazilian went on to speak about today’s game against Valletta: “Every game is important, Valletta have a great team and players, therefore we didn’t need to make any mistakes.”

Marcelo Dias is enjoying life with Hibs.
