Luke Gilbert netted four past Metheringham as Ruskington Lions enjoyed a successful visit to The Sports Centre, bagging nine goals throughout the 90. In an eventful first-half Gilbert opened the scoring with a strike at the far post from a Jake Pointon corner. Metheringham soon equalised as Aaron Stafford hit home. Ruskington quickly restored their lead with Gilbert netting his second goal of the first-half but Metheringham again equalised through Lewis Kelly. 10 Minutes before half-time Toby Petett got his second goal of the season with a 25-yard drive up and over the Metheringham goalkeeper, Josh Siddens, sending the Lions into half time with a 3-2 lead.
The flood gates opened after the break as Petett managed to break through the Metheringham defence with a powerful run which allowed him to go on to bag his second of the game. After a great period of play from Rusko, Gilbert managed to get his first competitive hat-trick after a powerful shot flew straight past Siddens. This wasn’t enough for the striker as he went on to get Ruskington’s sixth in the 65th minute. Ten minutes later Callum May got his first goal of the season after the energetic winger tapped in after good work from Lewis Robson. Not long after May managed to get a second with a strike which was thought to have wrapped up the win for Neal Yarwood’s side. Metheringham got a consultation goal as winger Jacques Hill snatched the ball of Ryan Goy’s weak back pass to Lions goalkeeper, Jack Vine.
A tactical decision by Yarwood to give Robson the captaincy as Jake Pointon was subbed off for Daniel Hare, who was placed into centre back allowing Charlie Russell to be placed in a central midfield role where he has been seen on a number of occasions this season. With just one minute left on the clock Petett swung a powerful corner towards the front post where Russell managed to head home his second goal of the season and secure the victory for Yarwood’s men after a disappointing 8-0 loss a fortnight ago.
